Services of Worship

Current Worship Arrangements

We have resumed public worship in our churches. Details of future services are posted on the Forthcoming Events page as they becomes available.

Lydia, our Team Vicar, will continue to provide a recorded Morning Prayer service on YouTube and Facebook each Sunday until 4th July. For details see the News section on the Home page.

Four of our five churches are open for private prayer on the days and at the times shown on the Home page.

Normal Sunday Services in the 'Layer' Parishes

In our three 'Layer' villages, services of worship are held at the following churches:

LAYER DE LA HAYE - St John the Baptist
LAYER MARNEY - St Mary the Virgin
LAYER BRETON - St Mary the Virgin
, but only on special occasions.

Elsewhere on this website you can find information on the church buildings and their locations.

Also on this page are details of normal Sunday services at Copford (St Michael & All Angels) and Easthorpe (St Mary the Virgin). The ministry of our five parishes and their respective churches is led by our Team Vicar, The Revd Lydia Smith.

Normal Service Pattern: – The tables below show the normal pattern of Sunday services Layer de la Haye, Layer Marney, Copford and Easthorpe. Where there is a fifth Sunday in a month we usually have just one morning service, a Holy Communion at 9-30am, at one of our churches. Notice of the venue is usually posted on the Forthcoming Events page.

We do recommend that you regularly check for any changes by visiting the Forthcoming Events page of this website and looking in our monthly publications : the Parish Gazette, for services at Layer de la Haye, and Parish News for services at Layer Marney.

In the tables below, '(CW)' indicates a Common Worship order, and '(BCP)' indicates a Book of Common Prayer (i.e. 1662) service.

Orders of Service - Common Worship

For our main Sunday services in the Layer parishes we usually use Common Worship orders.

Common Worship Holy Communion Order One is used for all Communion Services in the Layer parishes. The order of service is printed in an easy to follow booklet which is provided in all our churches.

To view our order of Communion use this link: Holy Communion in the Layer Parishes - web (HTML) version

From the above link you can also download the web page file (communion-CW-largeprint.html) onto your iPad, tablet or other portable device. Once downloaded you do not need to be on-line or to have a mobile signal to view the page - just open the file. Following the service on your iPad / tablet / mobile, the text size can be adjusted to meet your personal preferences or needs.

Our order of Communion is also available to download as a PDF using the link Holy Communion in the Layer Parishes - PDF version
(To download to a laptop or desktop PC, right click on the link and select 'Save target as ...' or similar option.)

Bible Readings at Services – Common Worship Lectionary

The Bible readings at our services are normally those set out in the Common Worship Lectionary.

The lectionary follows a three year cycle of readings. From Advent Sunday 2020 (29th November) the Lectionary readings are those for Year B until the First Sunday of Advent in 2021 (28th November) when we will start using the readings for Year C.
